At the risk of lapsing into sports-clich\u00e9 territory, this week\u2019s eclipse showed us a lot about \u201ceffort\u201d.<\/p>\n

Giving something \u201cyour all\u201d means something, and it\u2019s significant.<\/p>\n

The difference between ninety-nine percent<\/em> and totality<\/em> is striking:<\/p>\n

With 99 percent of the sun covered, it remained absolutely impossible to look up with the naked eye (except for those who wanted to impress Tucker Carlson<\/em>).<\/p>\n

It was daylight outside \u2013 not even dusk, more like the start of a summer shower. Temperatures were still mid-morning warm.\"\"<\/p>\n

Going from “99” to “100” did not just make it “one darker”.<\/p>\n

With 100 percent of the sun covered, it was more than a step-change.<\/p>\n

It was monumental.<\/p>\n

Temperatures plunged. Birds panicked. Stars, planets, the International Freakin’ Space Station<\/span>, were visible.<\/p>\n

You could stare at the sun<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And what you saw was \u2013 nothing. An impression. An empty space once occupied by that from whence all of our power comes. Solar winds circling the perimeter of nothingness.<\/p>\n

Then everything shifted again; one percent of the sun was visible.<\/p>\n

And it became a summer morning again. And it became impossible to look at the sun \u2013 even if you squinted really good-like.<\/p>\n

And everyone clapped, got in their cars, and drove away.<\/p>\n

And it became a normal, sunny, summer morning \u2013 with 98 percent of the sun still blocked.<\/p>\n
